by Jon MacPhie

If you are the owner of a page on Facebook, you probably want to keep track of its popularity and have an idea of how many people are actually looking at your page.  Recent changes to Facebook included a significant change to reporting on activity related to your page, recorded in the Insights section by Facebook.

Do you actually know what the Facebook ‘Page Insights’ are telling you?

The most common terms you will see using insights are Reach, Engaged Users, Virality and People Talking About This.

Can Augmented Reality boost your marketing?

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

by Nickie Gray

At Mexia we fully embrace new technology that can create PR and marketing opportunities, so when we heard about ‘Augmented Reality’ we decided to take a closer look.

Augmented Reality (AR) put simply is the art of super-imposing computer generated content over a live view of the world.  This means that artificial information about your environment and objects can be overlaid on the real world.  AR is designed to supply information about your environment that is otherwise undetectable to your naked senses.  In order to make it work, you need a real time environment and a method to display the information, such as a mobile phone.

AR is a fairly new technology and the potential applications are still being developed.   You may be more familiar with AR in games (Microsoft Kinect for example), but businesses are slowing adopting the technology and experimenting with it.

A couple of examples of how AR is being used in communications:

  • A big brand supermarket in the UK is encouraging its consumers to visit their website and download an app that allows them to scan their current location, which then gives them access to their nearest  store.
  • A hotel service provider is allowing smart phone users to download an app to search for nearby hotels via their camera with distances, room prices and reviews all displayed in-app.
  • A political party in Europe has been utilising an app that creates the illusion of an interactive billboard.  When scanned with the app, videos of political party appear on a mobile device, laid over the real-world billboards.  The second feature gives the user more input, allowing conversations to be conducted around their country, using virtual points of interest (POIs). With the app, you can actively participate in the real public space by posting or interacting with others on topics of interest, such as payable living space, education, energy consumption or production and public transport.

If AR looks like something you could use in your marketing, you will need a software developer to work with you to build your AR and any apps required.

Have you started using AR technology yet?  We would love to hear from you and your experiences.

Top Tips for Video Production

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

Jo Crook, one of Mexia’s Account Manager, recently embarked on a video production for Wessex Fertility.

We asked Jo to share her experience and provide some top tips to help make sure you get it right!

  • Ensure you get a really good brief from the client in the first instance to set expectations
  • Look at how the video should flow and agree a script or at least some prompts
  • Rehearse – make sure your client knows the script and understands what they need to say
  • Where will you be filming? What branding do you want the video to capture?  Make sure you create the right impression
  • Is natural daylight available?  Ensure the area is clean and tidy, put clutter away
  • Work with an experienced and flexible videographer – it will pay dividends when it comes to amends!
  • Understand the parameters, ie maximum memory size and time allowed for uploading to sites like Facebook
  • Have an understanding of web hosts and their bandwidth capabilities/cost.  Ask whether it can be streamed through your website or if you need to use YouTube
  • Gain a knowledge of YouTube and how to upload, embed and edit your video
  • Ask questions off camera and ask the speaker to answer to camera, just like an interview
  • Editing, choosing, agreeing and purchasing background music can be very time consuming so be aware of how long these things can take

Need to create a video for your business?  Contact us now for an initial discussion about how we can help.

On the social media map – why venues should bother with Foursquare

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

As Facebook and Twitter become household names, even for those who aren’t really sure how they work, the social media revolution marches on.  New tools and networks are springing up all the time, but which ones are really important and how can your business benefit?  The proliferation of hand-held smartphone devices has been a key driver in the rapid uptake of social media networks – it’s easier than ever to keep in touch on the move.  People using social media networks on mobile devices can have their location identified, giving rise to a new breed of ‘geo-location’ tools, most notably Foursquare.

Foursquare?  Not another one we have to think about, I hear you say, but this one works in a different way from tools like Twitter and is not nearly as time-intensive.  Put simply, Foursquare contains a directory of ‘places’ (this might be venues, restaurants, schools, train stations etc) which it flags to Foursquare users when they arrive at a location and look to ‘check in’.

School of marketing magic?

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Article written by Kursha Woodgate and published on the Exhibition News Blog

As Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia battle it out at the Christmas Box Office, I am given to thinking of just how much magic a solid marketing effort can conjure up.

Whenever I have presented on the topic of marketing at event trade exhibitions such as International Confex and Event UK, I am usually asked to focus on ‘budget marketing’ and how to get the most for your money. People are often anticipating some magical formula that will somehow enlighten them as to how to spend little or no money on marketing and yet magically achieve phenomenal results.. read more

LinkedIn or out!

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Personal and business networking sites, so different but why do so many of us still struggle to differentiate how to use them?

Most people use LinkedIn to connect to business contacts, perhaps investigate opportunities to form a partnership, or get even a job.   It is not a site for demonstrating who your ‘friends’ are, for viewing pictures  or posting about what you had for lunch today!  So why do so many people treat LinkedIn and the likes of Facebook as the same?

I have discussed social networking sites a lot of late, with friends and business colleagues.  A lot of feedback has indicated that people have been reluctant to connect on LinkedIn because they are applying similar principles to Facebook, ie who they like best, rather than what makes business sense in terms of connection.
